HOL Turbo is a simple-to-use web accelerator that dramatically speeds up
downloads over a dialup connection. Please see the information below to
get answers to common questions about the service.
-
What exactly is HOL Turbo and how does it work?
HOL Turbo is an advanced client-server application which uses a proprietary
content acceleration platform to offer complete support for all major
Internet applications including general web browsing (HTTP), sending email
(SMTP) and receiving email (POP3), as well as custom third-party web
applications. At the core of the technology is the world's best on-line,
lossless data compression algorithm. Pioneered by leading information
theorists, it represents one of the most significant advancements in
lossless data compression in the last 20 years. In short, the HOL Turbo
accelerator speeds up your web and email downloads dramatically, taking
advantage of advanced technology to maximize your 56K so-called "slow"
dialup connection.
HOL Turbo also includes a few bonus features, like a pop-up ad blocker
and a Macromedia Flash floating-animation blocker.
-
Does HOL Turbo speed up my email?
Yes. Downloading email to any standard POP client, such as Microsoft
Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, or Qualcomm Eudora, will run from
15 to 25 times faster. Web-based email services like
HOL Webmail, Yahoo!,
or Hotmail will also run faster, giving you the same kind of acceleration
you see with other web pages.
-
Does HOL Turbo speed up my secure transactions (HTTPS),
such as web banking?
We're sorry, but HOL Turbo does not accelerate secure transactions.
Secure websites will continue to work as normal.
-
What speeds up with HOL Turbo?
HTML, Javascript, JPEG images, GIF images, and text will load faster.
These kinds of files make up the majority of normal web surfing and
email. Streaming media, secure pages, executables, and file attachments
such as music and digital photos will load at normal speeds.
-
I have DSL. Can I use HOL Turbo to speed up the 'Net?
HOL Turbo is designed to work best over a dialup connection. If you have
DSL or some other kind of high speed service, we recommend that you use
our free web cache instead.
-
Where can I download HOL Turbo?
HOL Turbo is available here.
Follow the instructions on that page to install the software and activate
the service.
-
What operating systems can HOL Turbo be installed on?
HOL Turbo will run on any of the following operating systems:
- Windows 95b w/ Winsock2; older versions of 95 will not work
- Windows 98
- Windows 98SE
- Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME)
- Windows NT 4.0
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
- MacIntosh OSX
If you have an older version of Windows 95, you may want to upgrade to Windows Socket 2. Installing
upgrades can be dangerous -- please make sure that you only run this
upgrade if you know you need it. We strongly recommend that you back up
your system before doing this. Hawaii OnLine cannot assume responsibility
for upgrades made to your computer. If you don't feel confident about
performing such upgrades, we recommend that you consult Microsoft or a
qualified professional.
-
What are the computer system requirements to use HOL Turbo?
The recommended system requirements for HOL Turbo are a Pentium running
at 200MHz with 64MB of RAM and at least 5 MB of hard disk space. The
software will work seamlessly within your current system configuration to
provide you with the best content acceleration.
-
I downloaded the HOL Turbo Installer but now
I can't find it on my computer. Where did it go?
Use the Windows Find tool located in the Start Menu to search for the file
"HOL_Turbo_Installer.exe"(for Windows) and "HOL_Turbo_Installer.exe"(for MacIntosh). If you still can't find it, download
it again and be sure to save the file to your Desktop.
-
How do I start the HOL Turbo web accelerator?
The accelerator is launched automatically every time the computer starts.
You don't have to do anything. An HOL Turbo icon
will appear in
the Windows system tray to show that it's operating in the background.
-
Can I use HOL Turbo with Netscape Navigator?
Yes. Start Navigator and browse as you normally would. HOL Turbo is
launched automatically everytime Windows starts. It operates in the
background to speed up your web connection. No user intervention is
required.
-
Can I use my HOL Turbo web accelerator with other browsers
such as Opera or Mozilla?
Yes. HOL Turbo works with any web browser that allows you to specify an
HTTP proxy. (This is set up automatically if you use Internet Explorer or
Netscape Navigator, though.) You must set the HTTP proxy host to be
localhost and the port number to be 5400.
Consult your browser's documentation for information on how this can be
done.
-
How do I change the image display quality in a certain page?
To view a single image in all of its original detail, right-click on it
within Internet Explorer and select "Show Original Image".
To view all the images on a given page in full detail, right-click any
one of the images within Internet Explorer and select "Show All
Original Images".
-
How can I control the performance of HOL Turbo?
You can control HOL Turbo's performance by configuring it to download
images faster or slower. If you want to maximize download speeds, you
will lose some image quality. If you want to see the highest-quality
images, you will have to sacrifice some, but not all, of the performance
benefits.
To change the display quality of all images, right-click on the HOL Turbo
taskbar icon and select "Settings". Select the "Image
Quality" tab. Adjust the slider bar to the desired quality setting.
Press OK to save the changes.
-
Why don't some Java applets work (like certain games on
www.pogo.com)?
Older versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cannot display certain
image types (such as 'PNG'). To fix this problem, open up your HOL Turbo
settings window and simply set your Image Quality slider to the maximum
level, or upgrade to the newest JRE.
-
What does this error message mean: "Email acceleration
features have been disabled because incompatible software has been
detected?"
If this message pops up when HOL Turbo runs, it means that you have another
program installed on your computer that's running behind the scenes to
work with your remote mailbox (through POP or IMAP) and it's interfering
with HOL Turbo. You can avoid the error message by preventing the other
software from running all the time or by telling HOL Turbo not to speed
up email downloads: Right-click the HOL Turbo icon in the system tray,
select Settings..., then the Email tab, then select
Disable under Acceleration Mode and click OK.
-
How much does HOL Turbo cost?
HOL Turbo is the most cost-effective way to boost your dialup connection
speed. You can try the service free for 30 days. After that it costs
$5 to set up and only $2.95 per month, or less than 10 cents per day.
After the 30-day trial is over, we'll automatically add the new service to
your bill. If at any time you decide that you don't like it, simply call
HOL Customer Support and we'll immediately remove
the service from your account. You can then go on with the same dialup
service you had before the trial period.
