GENERAL MEETING

13 November 96 Wednesday 7:00 pm

This is your opportunity to formulate the CTPA’s positions on these issues and to help set our goals and programs for the coming year. This is not a vote of predetermined positions designed by leadership. Instead, participants will be divided into small working groups to identify issues and problems as well as to come up with creative ways of resolving our concerns. Every member will have the opportunity to participate on a continuing basis. The CTPA is the ONLY organization which represents only your interests, concerns and desires in public access. But we can’t succeed unless you take part. Please attend the November 13th meeting and be prepared to speak up about what you want when we break into small working groups to start articulating what we want and what we need. Later that evening, each group’s report will be combined into one for the CTPA Board of Directors.

NEW INFORMATION HOT LINE

The CTPA wants to collect information
about ‘OLELO users’ positive and negative experiences
using public access, equipment problems, suggestions
and solutions in order to share information amongst
our members and to assist ‘Olelo in making
improvements. To do this, we have established a
24 hour voice mail number for you to report your
experiences. We will summarize the calls, follow up
on them where needed and pass along what we discover
to our membership in our regular newsletters and at
meetings.

Consider yourself a reporter for the CTPA
Chronicles. Here’s the information required:
your name, a contact telephone number, the show you
worked on, the date and a brief explanation of what
happened. Please be as specific as possible. Don’t
forget to pass along both staff and volunteer
compliments and accolades as well. We will follow up
and get back to you.

We want to identify technical and procedural
problems so if you have a solution or suggestion,
please mention that. Also, please take the time to
report trouble-free productions and procedures which
work.

The CTPA is a member-driven organization,
helping both producers and technicians to improve
our public access experiences.

Call 566-8338 anytime with your comments,
questions and concerns.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Aloha to all the members of the CTPA.
After a couple of board meetings, we launched this
new administration by staging and hosting the recent
Networking Party at the ‘Olelo classroom this past
October 5, 1996. The event featured 1) an educational
presentation on video tape handling by Cosmo
Enterprises representative, Thomas Pereira, our
sponsor; 2) an informational report about the new
‘Olelo Channel realignment and state cable office
by Sean McLaughlin, producer of City Council TV;
3) a brief overview on Public Access by ‘Olelo
Executive director, Richard Turner; 4) fabulous
entertainment by Uncle Willie K; and 5) plenty of
food and refreshments provided by Cosmo Enterprises
(they also took care of the CTPA invitation
printing and postage).

The occasion was designed as a get together to
stir interest in Public Access and, or course, the
CTPA. The underlying concern is for the current
state of Public Access and its future, which will
impact us all, and our role as producers, techs, and
CTPA members, in supporting ‘Olelo in its new
program plan and its direction along with our
reservations and concerns for keeping Public Access
Public.

The 60 or so attendees had the opportunity to
network and meet new people. There were even reps
from the Civil Defense Office talking to
prospective producers about a community project.

Jeff Garland was eager to bring a couple of
computers to display video animations and provided a
hands on walk on the InterNet. Finally, we generated
an informational survey for our new database
and welcomed ten new members to our organization.

We agree that we needed another 100 producers/
technicians present to have been genuinely successful
but we feel confident that it was a good beginning.
On Oct 22nd, our board met again to establish a
legislative committee to lobby for Public Access
during the Legislative Sessions.

I urge all to reconsider any past conceptions any
of us may have about the CTPA. Unless we form a
united alliance and have our voices heard through the
CTPA, the legislature may assume that we are
part of the process, and in accordance with the
testimonials, will create policy that will slice us
right out of Public Access. It’s imperative to become
part of that process to become part of the solution.
The time for action is now. Please come to our
next General Meeting Nov. 13th at ‘Oleloland.
