The CTPA inaugurated the first of our Networking Parties on 5 October 1996. The theme for these events focuses on the designs of our mission statement of instigating interest in Public Access, of addressing our underlying concern of the current state of Public Access and how its future will impact us. It is also an occasion to encourage new memberships or former members to return to the CTPA to help us direct the reservations and interests we hold as a group. Our sponsor for the first party, Cosmo Enterprise, covered costs for printing the invitation, the postage, the food and the drinks. Cosmo representative, Thomas Pereira, made a valuable How to take care of your Tapes presentation. Through the efforts of Community Producer and former CTPA board member, Jeff Garland, entertainment was provided courtesy of popular local musician, Willie K.; former CTPA board member, Sean McLaughlin, reported about the new channel alignment and; Richard Turner, ‘Olelo Executive Director, briefed the 65 attendees on Public Access. A General CTPA meeting followed on November 13 at ‘Olelo. We continued our discussions on Public Access, its current policies and the CTPA’s position on the issues and the goals thereof. Our second Networking Party on January 14th of 1997, the first big bang of the year, was sponsored by ‘Olelo who printed the invitation, provided postage, the food and drinks, along with the use of the classroom and its amenities. Greg Socher, of Mm&M Advertising, our featured speaker, addressed the crowd of 70 speaking on the AVID edit system and non-linear editing. He was such a huge hit, we had to cut his time on stage to allow others to speak. ‘Olelo Production Trainer, Andy Jacobs, and CTPA directors Wendy Arbeit and Brian Lee also made informative presentations on various topics regarding Public Access. All in all, the evening was a smashing success of informational exchange, meeting new people and networking ideas with each other. If you missed attending, we recommend you consider coming to the next one.HOTLINE
The CTPA telephone hot line has been deactivated. With only a handful of calls in the course of three months, the board decided it was not cost effective.ACCESS THE WORLD ON THE INTERNET
Abundant information about Community Television may be found on the World Wide Web. For those of you who regularly "surf the net" this may not be news, but if you have not discovered the incredible resources readily available to everyone on the net, you're in for some great surprises. The CTPA established a web site three years ago [http://www.aloha.net/~ctpa]. This has been a great resource with its information about `Olelo as well as links to other access centers. In addition, CTPA organizational information, current events and the latest Newsletter may be seen at this location. After much urging `Olelo has finally put up a site, but as of this writing, it is only a link to legislative matters [http://www.olelo.org]. Miki Lee of `Olelo has said that there will be information for the viewers on the `Olelo pages soon. There is an "unofficial" `Olelo site which contains ample information about `Olelo, including staff extension numbers, hours of operation, programming schedules, forms, a tour of LCC Facilities and even a map to `Olelo [http://www.toptown.com/hp/access hawaii/]. If you're interested in seeing what's going on with community television all over the world, there are hundreds of links to access centers and organizations. Many access centers provide training information, promotion of client's programming and recognize volunteer activities with pictures of their awards parties and other events. Want to see what's playing on Community Television on Cape Cod? Check out [http://www.capecod.net/c3tv] Or in Sweden [http://www.openchannel.se/links.htm]. The Alliance for Community Media, the national access organization, is at [http://www.comm21.acm.html]. Several producers of Community Television here on Oahu have web sites with pictures and information about their programs, such as: Que Pasa Hawaii [http://www.hotspots.hawaii.com/QuePasa.html] Digital Eyes [http://www.aloha.com/~digitali/dgtleyes.htm] Sleepless [http://nitrogen.nmr.hawaii.edu/sleepless] Hi-Trenz [http://www2.hawaii.ed/usr-cgi/ssis/donaldf/] Look at their pages and send them an e-mail. With emerging technologies comes a more accessible world. Television, telephone and the internet will all be in the same box. Very soon our television audience will not be limited to this island but the community of the world.CTPA RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS BULLETIN BOARD
At ‘Olelo’s December 1996 Board Meeting, the CTPA formally requested that a new bulletin board be placed in the public work room. This board would be used for announcements by CTPA as well as other community access users. In the old facility, there were 8 well used bulletin boards, one of which was specifically for the CTPA. Despite repeated requests over the last two years, ‘Olelo has provided only one bulletin board in the new facility. Since that one is dominated by announcements for mainland events, little space remains for communication among ‘Olelo’s users. Because the CTPA feels that communication is the basis of a sense of community necessary and appropriate to a community broadcasting facility, we have made this formal request on the behalf of our members and other public access participants.LIGHTS, LIGHTING, LIGHTING!
‘Olelo staffer, Dominic Monteleone, reports that he has finished his latest project of setting up a standard lighting grid in the STUDIO. He says that producers can now cut down on their studio lighting time that would otherwise require three to four hours. "In fifteen to twenty minutes, a quick climb up the ladder with a few minor adjustments to the barndoors, a tilt or a pan of the lighting instrument and Bang you are done!" says Dominic. Apparently he labored on a drawing board and in the studio designing a standard lighting grid to service multiple stage configurations with one to five talents on camera. For more details, Facilities will furnish you with the book he prepared with all the information. Just ask for it. "Is this a great country or what"?

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
It is with pride that I can report to you that your volunteer Officers and Directors of the CTPA have done an excellent job for you. In the past six months we have experienced great successes in staging of our "get-togethers" and the affairs of the organization are in good order. The board of directors has been meeting almost religiously twice a month and that regularity has been the prime factor in promoting our mission statement in keeping with the concerns of Public Access. WE have been fortunate to have had sponsors interested in assisting the CTPA realize its endeavors to better serve you. These sponsorships have contributed in maintaining our treasury intact and subsequently the costs incurred have been minimal for the CTPA. Elections for five vacancies in our 10 member board of directors will take place at our Annual Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 18 March 1997 from 7p-9p at ‘Olelo. It is imperative that you exercise your right to vote for the candidate of your choice from the slate of candidates prepared by our nominating committee. Headed by Vice-President John Feil and Director Ray O’Leary, if you have questions, the committee has answers. In order to vote or to become eligible as a candidate for office, you must be a paid up current member, so I urge you to get your dues up to date today. The CTPA is a member driven organization with a group of volunteers at the helm. In the past four months we generated 20 new memberships. However, from the information we receive from ‘Olelo Public Relations person, Miki Lee, there are a great number of clients on the rolls of Public Access who are not involved and we hope if you are not currently a member that you will join and support. Unfortunately, hope is not enough. It is going to take action to support that hope. That action is your membership. We encourage the new certified clients and all the former members to become accountable for Public Access. Become actively involved and join the CTPA. You will find a membership form in this publication, please use it, we need your kokua. We need you on our roster when we approach the Legislature to speak out about our responsibilities in the interest of the users of Public Access. On behalf of the board of directors, we want to meet you and we want to see you at the annual meeting. Be there, Aloha! Pedro Valdez President
