What's New?

Petitions have been signed and submitted to the 'Olelo Board of Directors with over 100 signatures from the public, which is just about every active member of the Public Access community at 'Olelo, to not cut the funding for services at Leeward Community College. This will only hurt those areas which need access the most. Stay tuned for more. . . .

Who's Whom?

Okay, this is a pop quiz to see how savvy you are about the happenings at 'Olelo. A low score probably means you are too busy getting a real life. A high score probably means that you are privy to a lot of gossip.

  • 1) Which edit bay has the most space?
  • 2) Which music program is produced locally and features local bands with original music?
  • 3) What day has "Que Pasa" moved to?
  • 4) What is the name of the "master" fonts from which different size fonts can be created?
  • 5) What time does the rear parking lot close at 'Olelo?
  • 6) Where can you use an electronic still store?
  • 7) What is the transition number for a "MIX" on the DFS-500 switcher?
  • 8) How many minutes does a one hour ¾" videotape really have?
  • Tech Tips-"Dub-Founded"

Many Producers and Editors make backup copies of their ¾" U-Matic masters. This is a good policy, but often the copies suffer a lot from going down even one generation. Fortunately, the edit bays have a "dub cable" between the ¾" playback and record decks. This cable connects the playback deck directly to the record deck, bypassing the DFS-500 switcher and the Presto Character Generator which, like any components between a signal path, will cause some degradation. Note that dubs made this way cannot use the DFS-500 or the Presto C.G. for any further effects, however, the audio mixer can still be used to adjust levels and equalization (if necessary).

To use this method to make the cleanest possible copies, first use a brand new tape! Next, flip the "Input" switch on the record deck to "DUB" instead of "LINE" and manually press the "PLAY" button on the left side of the edit controller. Then immediately press the "RECORD" and "PLAY" buttons on the right side of the edit controller.

You will also save time on your copies because you do not even have to "black" your tapes using this method; just set the edit controller to "ASSEMBLE" edit. Be sure to start at the beginning of both tapes when you perform this "crash edit" otherwise you will have a broken control track in the middle of your tape.

If your tape is already blacked, you can use the edit controller to perform insert editing using the "dub" switch.

Now you can have the cleanest possible copies and save time by not having to black tapes. Keep on dubbing, copycats!

Almost 30 people showed up at the C.T.P.A. annual meeting in March and a good time was had by all. Also in attendance was Kealii Lopez and Ian Farrell to answer questions concerning the administration. Thanks for your input! . . . Four new members were elected to the C.T.P.A. Board of Directors: Mara Soloway, Len Ciupak, Charlotte Savage, and John Feil. Please thank them for their service to the organization when you see them . . . 'Olelo's Open House in March 1995 for the new building at 1122 Mapunapuna was another event benefiting from the help of C.T.P.A. members: Mr. & Mrs. Elm gave visitors a demonstration of the edit bays, Gwen Taketa contributed by helping film the festivities with a field camera and Pedro Valdez and other C.T.P.A. members demonstrated the use of the new studio . . . Jeff Garland has secured discounts for Internet accounts for all C.T.P.A. members to get unlimited access at just $20 a month. Call Jeff at 239-8842 for more details . . . Mahalo to new members Shari Au, Father John, John Feil, Dr. Bill Kennon, Nathan Nitta, Ray O' Leary, Bob Pearson and Charlotte Savage . . . Welcome aboard, guys and gals! . . . Java Time: As a public service, C.T.P.A. has been providing a coffee maker, coffee and condiments for clients to enjoy while at the 'Olelo studios. When you are in the studio or edit bays, please help keep the refreshment area clean for everyone!. . . We had hoped to put out the C.T.P.A. newsletter every two months but, alas, this time it will be on the third month. But we have a good excuse, really! Jeff and Brian have been hard at work putting up a C.T.P.A. Home Page on the Internet's World Wide Web. This page went on-line at the end of April, so you see, we weren't just goofing around. 'Olelo's program schedules and our links to other access centers are now on the Internet. Check it out at http://www.aloha.net/~ctpa, we have been getting over 100 requests a day at our Home Page! . . . Senate Resolution #65 was passed by the State legislature calling for a study of the state's PEG access centers by the Legislative Reference Bureau regarding board representation and the effectiveness of all four access centers in Hawaii. Their report will be due around January of next year. Those interested in commenting may call Susan Jarowski of the Legislative Reference Bureau at 587-0663 . . . 'Olelo Five Year Plan: highlights include a proposal to purchase another van for mobile shoots, however, there has been discussion about renting the 'Olelo van to an "un-named government agency." Naturally, C.T.P.A. is concerned this will once again take access away from the public, and will continue to make this point heard at 'Olelo Board of Directors meetings. It would seem that instead of purchasing another van, 'Olelo should spend the money on the long-promised extra edit bays, which are consistently booked over 90% of the time . . . As we go to press, the 'Olelo board has decided not to overturn the administration's decision to cut Leeward Community College's funding by about $40,000.00 in spite of the overwhelming support shown by the public in the C.T.P.A. sponsored petition. However, the 'Olelo Board has stated it wants to try and find a way to restore that funding. In the meantime though, L.C.C. will definitely be cutting back on their studio, training and editing services . . . A new "Shop Talk" service, a joint- effort between 'Olelo and the C.T.P.A. got started June 15th. This gathering will be used as an informal forum for clients to exchange ideas with the 'Olelo staff, C.T.P.A. and each other. Call Loreen Matsushima for more info.
