A Spiritual Exercise to Try
A spiritual
exercise is any technique which will help open your heart to God’s love
which surrounds us always. One of the simplest, but effective, spiritual
exercises in Eckankar is to sing the sound of HU. When you sing HU (which is an ancient name for God), you open your
heart to God’s love—you are singing a love song to God.
If you would
like to try it, gently close your eyes and place your attention on something
that opens your heart to love. It might be someone close to you, a nostalgic
time of your life, a beloved pet or even a favorite stuffed animal.
Softly begin to
sing HU (pronounced like the word “hue”). There is no special pitch
or tone; it is the love in your heart that will help lead the way. Do this for a few times then sit quietly for a few minutes.
Watch and listen for the presence of God. You may experience the love of God as
a feeling of peace, warmth, and comfort. Or you might perceive an inner light
or hear a soft sound such as the buzzing of bees or the waves of an ocean.
If you practice
this technique over time, you may discover reserves of inner strength and a
broader understanding of the spiritual lessons in your life.
