Biography

      Galen Fox was elected to the State House in November 1996, and re-elected in 2000, 2002 and 2004.  Currently, he serves as House Republican Leader.  Galen is also a member of the Finance, Labor and Transporation committee.   In the 1999-2000 session, Galen was House Republican Whip and served on the Finance, Transportation, and Tourism committees.  

      During 1991-1996, Galen was with the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism as an administrator, helping market Hawaii’s exports, attract outside investment, and manage Hawaii's overseas representation.   From 1985 to 1991, Galen was Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Honolulu for economic development, cooperating with the business community and others to strengthen and diversify Honolulu’s economy.  

      From 1982-1984, Galen directed a project at the East-West Center that examined East Asia’s economic success.   Galen returned to Hawaii in 1982 after 16 years as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer stationed in Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Washington, DC.   He speaks Mandarin Chinese.  

      Galen was born in Hilo, Hawaii in 1943, raised in Honolulu, and educated at the University of Hawaii’s Laboratory School and at Punahou.   He has a B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Redlands, a Ph.D. in Public Affairs from Princeton University, and was an International Affairs Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, New York.  

      Fox was a Hawaii delegate to the 2000 Republican National Convention.   He is a member of his church’s Executive Committee, the Waikiki Improvement Association, the Waikiki Residents Association, the Waikiki Citizens Patrol, and the Ala Wai Watershed Task Force.   He has been Secretary-Treasurer of the East-West Center Alumni Executive Committee, on Aloha United Way’s Executive Board, and was President of the Hawaii Community Services Council.   In the Foreign Service, Galen was Secretary of the U.S. Foreign Service’s national union.  

      Galen has two grown children, Derek and MeiMei.   Derek is currently working in Pasadena and married to Ms. Erica Brindley.   MeiMei is married to Dale Fox and they live in Los Angeles, CA.
