EXECUTIVE SECRETARY'S PAGE

A Message From Our New Executive Secretary

Dear members and friends of Hawaii Hongwanji Kyodan,

Aloha! My name is Shindo Nishiyama and I have been assigned to the Kyodan Headquarters by Bishop Yosemori to serve as Executive Secretary. I was the resident minister of the Waimea Honpa Hongwanji from June 1992 to October 1995. At that point, I was assigned to West Kauai Hongwanji Mission for four years, as the Waimea temple combined with the Hanapepe and Koloa temples.

Let me tell you about my background. I was born in Fukuoka, Japan, the youngest in a family of six. I graduated from Ryukoku University in Kyoto. We were told there was a need for overseas minister; therefore, I came to the Kyoto. We were told there was a need for overseas ministers; therefore, I came to the United State to gain experience as an overseas minister. I stayed in Grand Junction, Colorado for six months and then moved to Hawaii, residing at the Buddhist Study Center for one year as I learned about Hawaii. The former Bishop, Rev. Fujitani, was the director of the BSC at the time. With his assistance, I tried to participate in all the activities at the BSC, even though I didn't understand English well. It was a difficult time for me, but because of everyone's kokua, I could learn very deeply.

After a year, I returned to Japan due to my mother's hospitalization. In July 1991, I came back to Hawaii with my partner, Suzue, whom I met in Hawaii. I was assigned as an associate minister at Hawaii Betsuin. In June 1992, I was assigned to the Waimea Hongwanji Mission. I have been a Kaiuan for about eight years and resided happily in Waimea with Dharma friends to share the Dharma and Aloha.

Now I am in the Office of Bishop t coordinate and assist with Hawaii Kyodan programs and activities. I hope to provide the Bishop with a break from his non-stop, busy schedule, as much as I can.

May I take this opportunity to ask all ministers, Headquarters' staff, members and friends of the Hawaii Kyodan to guide me and help me serve as Executive Secretary of Hawaii Kyodan.

My wife Suzy, daughter Shanna, son Skyler, and I would like to express our appreciation to the members and friends of West Kauai Hongwanji for their kindness and Aloha throughout our stay in Waimea, Kauai. The wonderful and meaningful experiences I acquired while serving on Kauai will certainly aid me as I face the challenges of the new job and increased expectations.

In closing, we say hello to all members and friends of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. Arigato for your understanding and support. Please feel free to call me at anytime, from anywhere, whenever you need assistance you feel I may provide.

In Gassho,

Rev. Shindo Nishiyama, Suzue, Shanna, and Skyler
