Red-crested Cardinal - photo by Jim Denny

The first alien bird introduced to Kauai came via the colonizing Polynesians. The Moa, or Red Junglefowl, was set free here over a millennium ago. It is still doing well in the uplands of Kauai. With the second "discovery" of Kauai in 1778, the flood gate of introductions opened wide. The multitude of foreign ships that arrived in the wake of Cook brought with them the animals and plants of their homeland. Thirty-two species of alien birds, including the beautiful Red-crested Cardinal, are now known to breed on Kauai. Among them is certain to be found wonderful additions to the life list of the visiting birder.
