ROBERT KAMAU-sensei

Meet Robert Kamau-sensei, one of our
finest instructors! Kamau-sensei is
currently an instructor with the Open Aikido Class on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Kamau-sensei was born and raised in Hilo. He attended Waiakeawaena Elementary School,
Waiakea Intermediate School, and Hilo High School. He is a true Hiloan – a Hilo Boy all the way!
You may not see him singing or acting on your
television set, but Kamau-sensei is involved with the local cable
company. He
is employed as a maintenance technician for cable television by Hawaiian
Cablevision of Hilo. In fact, he has
been with the cable television company for a while going back to the days of
COMTEC Television.
Kamau-sensei is a family man. He is married and he and his wife,
Priscilla, are parents to two daughters and a son. He devotes a lot of his time to his family, but Kamau-sensei also
loves surfing, riding horses, diving for fish, and hunting. His favorite foods are shrimp, lobster, crab
– “the ones I can’t afford,” he says.
He has one pet peeve – cigarettes.
“Don’t like ‘um,” Kamau-sensei says.
Kamau-sensei started taking aikido back in early 1993
with Niwao-sensei. What got him
interested in aikido was that he wanted to learn how to take a fall. Kamau-sensei has come a long way, and he has
learned much more than how to fall. (Yes,
he takes falls very nicely and safely!)
He is also talented and knowledgeable in other aspects of aikido. Kamau-sensei is also a very active and
valuable member in all club activities, and a patient and effective
teacher. His current rank is yondan. As was stated earlier, you may not see
Kamau-sensei singing or acting on your t.v. set, but you can see him practicing
and teaching at the dojo. Join him in
his training!
