DENNIS MARSHALL-sensei
Believe it or not, we do have a sensei in our club
who spent a large portion of his formative, growing-up years in the “Lone Star
State.” Marshall-sensei was actually
born in the state of Ohio, but he grew up in and attended schools in
Texas. He graduated from Hill Junior
High, Norland High School, and East Texas State College, all in the state of
Texas.
We here in
Hilo were fortunate however, when he somehow decided to come to Hawai`i and
live on our beautiful island of Hawai`i.
We never got around to asking him how this came about. Perhaps you can ask him and learn about it
directly from him. Anyhow, he is now
involved in Hilo Seishikan Aikido and is a real boost to our club as the
instructor of the Family Aikido Class, an assistant instructor with the Youth
Class, and a very active participant in planning and carrying out our
club/family activities!

Marshall-sensei has an
interesting background in martial arts.
He trained in judo under renowned judo instructor Vince Tamura-sensei
back in Texas. He also practiced karate
and did some boxing, too. He first
started aikido here in Hilo, and his first aikido sensei was Adams-sensei. He went on to the black belt level, and
currently holds a yondan rank in aikido.
Marshall-sensei currently
works as a radio technician with the local police department. He and his wife, Malia, are parents to two
children, Monica and Kalae. Other than
aikido, his hobbies and interests lie in weight lifting and woodworking. Marshall-sensei applied his skill and
knowledge of woodworking to build our club bulletin located on the backside
wall of the dojo entrance at the Waiakea Recreation Center. When it comes to food, Marshall-sensei says
his favorites are just “any kind.”
His favorite color is yellow.
This has been a brief
introduction of our own Marshall-sensei.
Hope it gives you a little insight into the man. Thanks for all you have done so far, and
will be doing in the future, Marshall-sensei!
