SADAMI YAMAMOTO-sensei

One of the nicest, most patient Aikido instructors anywhere is our own Yamamoto-sensei!  One would have to search far and wide to come up with an instructor as nice and patient.  In addition, he is a fun and jolly person who makes it fun to train.

Yama-sensei, whose full name is Sadami Yamamoto, was born in Kurtistown, on August 2, a few years ago.  After finishing school, he served with the U.S. Army in the Far East.  Upon getting discharged, he returned to Hilo where he met and married his wife of many years, Sachiko.  They are now both retired, he from the County of Hawai`i and she from her job as a nurse at Hilo Medical Center.

Yama-Sensei first practiced aikido way back in the 1950s with Nagata-sensei at the old Hilo Cow Palace next to Mooheau Park.  He dropped out for a while and later started training again under Kenneth Kimata-sensei with the original Hilo Aikido Club.  This class met early in the morning and practiced a couple of times each week.  He earned his shodan ranking under Kimata-sensei and has been involved in instructing ever since.  Yama-sensei is now ranked godan.

Yama-sensei's hobbies are gardening and craft work.  His yard is a jungle of a wide variety of plants.  He also does a lot of woodworking.  Yama-sensei also has a keen interest in and a special feeling for massage and health topics in his efforts to help people.  He also loves to cook and eat!  His favorite meals include Filipino food dishes.  His favorite color is red.  Yama-sensei also loves to play badminton whenever he has time.

Yama-sensei currently is in charge of our Morning Open Aikido Class, which meets from 6:30 t0 8:00 on Saturday mornings.  The class currently has both adults and youngsters aged eleven on up enrolled.  Anyone interested may attend.  Yama-sensei is truly a kind and patient instructor, and we are really very proud and fortunate to have him instructing with Hilo Seishikan Aikido.
