THE CITY: THIRD MILLENNIUM, International Competition of Ideas
Presentation
Directed by Massimiliano Fuksas, the Architecture Sectiuon of the Biennale di Venezia is launchingn the competition THE CITY: THIRD MILLENNIUM as part of the on-line FORUM set up in preparation for the Biennale 2000.
Within the context of the central theme of the Architecture Biennale-
THE CITY: LESS AESTHETICS, MORE ETHICS- the competition intwends to offer a kaleidoscope of ideas and perspectives on the question of the contemporary city. It aims to bring together the most varied kinds of work by new planners and architects from all over the world in an attempt to get beyond mere aestheticism and identify the new ethical approaches being adopted. The architects and students taking part in the competition can use digital technology to present their ideas in an international forum that will also be open to the general public. For its part, the FORUM will provide real-time exhibition of material, reflecting international participation in the debate. Thus the special showcase of the Architecture Biennale, plus the Forum that precedes and accompanies it, will provide a site for the exchange of ideas and images. Thanks to these facilities, the public too willo have access to the most up-to-date visions of urban reality, and be able to take part in the debate on the contemporary city.
How to take part
Participants are invited to express their vision of THE CITY- not necessarily seen as one specific location but rather as a system of relations and structures that define contemporary life. The submissions will contain suggestions, ideas, hypotheses and outlines that express a personal interpretation of the city of the third millennium.
All students and architects throughout the world are invited to participate, free of charge, whether individually or in groups. To take part, one must send an email to laumana@aloha.net, accomapnied by the following material:
-four digital images of 800 x 600 pixels in 72 dpi and jpg or gif format (preferably reducible with no loss of information). Illustrating the proposed idea of a city of the third millennium, these may be produced using any technique or media available and may also include animation.
-a brief biographical outline of individual or group participants, plus postal and email addresses
