MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL April 12 - 18. This is the premiere hula competition and event of the year with hula halau (schools) coming to Hilo on the Big Island from around the state to dance ancient and modern hula. Chanting, the playing of ancient Hawaiian musical instruments, and the entire array of Hawaiian dance styles are shown. Call: 935-9168.

PARADE AND FIREWORKS (TBA). This Waikiki Electric Light Parade is part of the Honolulu International Bed Race Festival and features celebrities, beauty queens, marching bands, floats, entertainment, decorated beds and an International Food Faire, ending with the Royal Hawaiian Band playing the world famous 1812 Overture by Tchaikowsky.
