Kapalua Nature Society presents

The Hawaiian archipelago's rich natural resources will be showcased in Maui's premiere environmental event, the 2nd Annual Earth Maui Nature Summit, Aug. 27-31. The theme is malama ka'aina (care for the land) and the goal is to foster appreciation of nature and culture and to encourage prudent use and protection of natural resources.

In 1969, Maui Land & Pineapple Co.'s president, Colin C. Cameron, envisioned Kapalua as a sanctuary for man and nature, a place of culture and spirit that would continue its tradition as a Hawaiian playground fit for royalty.

Cameron designed Kapalua to fit the contours of the land with a sense of responsibility to future generations. Kapalua's trend-setting conservation programs, based on the original Hawaiian ahupua'a model or caring for resources from the mountains to the sea, include partnership arrangements with the State of Hawai'i, The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i and Audubon International. In 1995, the Kapalua Nature Society was established as a not-for-profit educational organization, which publishes the award-winning periodical, The Nature Journal.

Kapalua has developed a code of environmental ethics, markets enrichment travel packages with part of the income benefiting the Nature Conservancy; provides enrichment tours by shuttle within the resort; sponsors hiking and walking itineraries to explore the beauty of Maui; and has dedicated all properties in the resort to the ideal of preserving the unique Hawaiian environmental and cultural heritage.
