Ho`olaule`a O Ke Kai: A Moloka`i Seafest



Ka Hula Piko attracts halau to share their dance with kamaaina and visitors.

Every July 4th and 5th, Kaunakakai Wharf bustles from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a celebration to enhance awareness of the sea as one of Hawai'i's most important cultural, recreational and economic resources. It is free to the public and features an outrigger canoe regatta, sponsored by the Moloka'i Canoe Racing Association, a fishing tournament, windusrfing competition, kayaking races, a bike race crafts food booths and entertainment by Island musicians. Moloka`i reaches out to O`ahu

A festival of Moloka'i music, dance, crafts, food and travel will be presented by the Moloka'i Visitors Association on Saturday, July 26, 1997 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ward Warehouse Amphitheatre in Honolulu.

Two Moloka'i hula halau will perform. Halau Hula O Kukunaokala and its kumu hula John Kaimikaua will present a program of ancient chants and dance, including the unique animal hula of Moloka'i. Kumu hula Moana Dudoit and Raquel Dudoit, and Moana's Hula Halau will also share their dance, chants and music. Moloka'i Jam, a program of music from Moloka'i, will go on-state from noon to 3 p.m.

Moloka'i Ranch Safari Guide, Pilipo Solatorio, will present a slide show on animals of the Moloka'i Ranch Wildlife Conservation Park.

Hawaiian deer horn scrimshaw, fresh haku leis, Hawaiian hardwood carvings, halabaskets, silk screen areo and pau, seed leis silver jewelry and ceramics will be demonstrated and sold.

Sales of crafts and Moloka'i Bread will begin at 10 a.m. The fresh-baked white and onion cheese bread from Kanemitsu's Bakery will be flown to O'ahu.

A Moloka'i Three Day Adventure for Two will be the grand prize for a drawing from entries available at Ward Warehouse shops and restaurants from July 12 to 26.


Aloha Festivals



Ancient Moloka`i chants and dances include a unique animal hula, which will be shared at a Moloka`i festival at Ward Warehouse Amphitheater in Honolulu
on July 26, 1997.

Sept. 28 ­ Oct. 18. More than three weeks of Hawaiian events this Fall will include free performances by Moana's Hula Halau. The men's and women's open-ocean, outrigger canoe races from Hale O Lono Harbor to O'ahu, a parade through Kaunakakai town and the Moloka'i Mule Run on Oct. 4 will highlight Aloha Festivals. Throughout the celebration are concerts, food fests, dance contests and a royal ball.
