    mauna kea - white mountain

    skiig maunakea

Mauna Kea means white mountain in Hawaiian and winters bring on the snow. Skiers and snowboarders shoot down runs called Poi Bowl, Pele's Parlor, Prince Kuhio and King Kamehameha.

This image-a lone snowboarder making tracks down Mauna Kea, was captured by internationally acclaimed photographer John Russell. Russell owns a home below the Mauna Kea snows on the sunny makai side of Waimea.

Mauna Kea is the site of internationally funded astronomy research centers, with telescopes operated by American, Canadian, French and Japanese research institutions.
