This is a 5' X 2' studio painting of Onomea bay, on the old highway scenic route a few miles north-west of Hilo. The island at the end of the peninsula was once connected to the main island by a land bridge known as the Onomea Arch. The arch collapsed, isolating the end of the peninsula. The rubble remnants of the arch are still visible in the gap which is partially obscured from view by the palms in this image. The little island will likely eventually disappear in the patient waves.
