A Symbolic Decoding of the Seven Trumpets of Revelation
Revelation is a book of interesting symbols, but the common interpretation of the Seven Trumpets is to interpret them in a mostly literal sense, or apply them in a historical sense, across the Christian era. What follows assumes that the Seven Trumpets have a second meaning and fulfillment that heralds the second coming. This interpretation is distinct from, yet complementary to, the historical Adventist interpretation, and uses the Bible itself to unlock the symbols with very exciting results.
These are my preliminary condensed notes based on the Seven Trumpets (part 1) seminar presented by Bill Liversidge of Creative Growth Ministries, and may well be revised, or expanded with continuing study on the subject.
The First Trumpet
Rev 8:7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
Angel
An Angel in a general sense is a messenger of God, so the Seven Trumpets are delivering messages from God.
Trumpet
Exo 19:13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.
Exo 19:16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
Exo 19:17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. The Seven Trumpets represent a calling to come to God.
Hail
Isa 28:17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
The hail represents a sweeping away of the false teachings through the power of the truth.
Fire and 1/3 part burnt up - a purification or refining
Mal 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
Mal 3:3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.Zec 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
Zec 13:8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.
Zec 13:9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.When the third part of trees and all green grass was burnt up, this represents a refining, an acceptance of the truth. If applied as a rule for the Trumpets, this would indicate that when 1/3 of a group is mentioned, they are the portion that will be saved.
Blood - the saving blood of Jesus
John 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
In the mingling of hail, fire and blood, the truth of the Gospel message is presented forcefully, such that it sweeps away lies, and calls the sinner to accept the atoning blood of Jesus to take away sin.
Earth
Rev 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
The beast from the Earth in Revelation 13 represents apostate Protestantism based in the United States. It contrasts with the beast from the Sea, which is in the most narrow sense understood to be Catholicism.
Tree
Psa 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.Dan 4:10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.
Dan 4:20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;
Dan 4:21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation:
Dan 4:22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. The tree is symbolic of people in a position of leadership, so in the First Trumpet it represents the Pastors and leaders of Apostate Protestantism in the United States.
Green
Gen 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
Green here represents something that has life, and is nourishing and life giving to others.
Grass
Isa 40:6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
Isa 40:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass represents the general public, so in the First Trumpet it represents the laity of Apostate Protestantism in the United States. The green grass represents those of the Protestant laity who have nourished others in the truth of the Gospel message, and so will be saved. Although not expressly stated, this may also be only one third of the laity.
The First Trumpet is a message directed at apostate Protestantism in the United States that sweeps away the false doctrines and calls them to the true Gospel of salvation through the blood of Christ. The indication is that only 1/3 of apostate Protestant leaders will respond to the trumpet, and the remaining 2/3rds who take the mark of the Beast will receive the First Plague, a grievous sore (Rev 16:2).
The Second Trumpet
Rev 8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
Rev 8:9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.Great mountain burning with fire
Exo 19:18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
The great burning mountain represents the giving of the law of God on Sinai.
Sea
Rev 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
The Sea represents the densely populated region of Europe, and the beast from the Sea represents Catholicism and popery.
Third part of the sea became blood - those who are saved.
Gen 9:4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Deu 12:23 Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.
John 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
1/3 of the Sea becoming blood represents people turning to life (the life is in the blood), turning to the atoning blood of Christ and being saved.
Ships
The ships are the parallel of the trees in the first trumpet and represent the leadership of the Catholic Church.
Third part of the ships were destroyed.
The "third part", as in the first trumpet, represents those who are saved.
Creatures in the sea
The creatures of the sea are the parallel of the grass in the first trumpet and represent the laity of the Catholic Church.
Third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died.
Again, the third part represents those who "die to Christ" and are saved.
The second trumpet represents the presentation of God's law to Catholicism, which has thought to change the Sabbath commandment of God, and make its mark of authority Sunday worship. The indication is that only 1/3 of Catholicism will respond, and those who do not heed the call to come out of Babylon will receive the second plague, and have only blood to drink (Rev. 16:3)
The Third Trumpet
Rev 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
Rev 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.A great star from heaven
Num 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
The star from heaven is Jesus.
A burning Lamp
Gen 15:17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
It fell upon the third part of the rivers
Rev 17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
As waters represent a multitude of peoples, and the previous trumpets were directed to apostate Protestants and Catholics respectively, these waters represent the non-Christian religions (the -isms) and the secular world (those who profess no religion). This indicates that 1/3 of this group will heed the trumpet and be saved.
Wormwood
Deu 29:18 Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;
Deu 29:19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:
Deu 29:20 The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.Jer 23:15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.
Amos 5:7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,
Amos 5:8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:Exo 15:22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.
Exo 15:23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
Exo 15:24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?
Exo 15:25 And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD showed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,The tree in the above passage symbolizes the cross of Christ, and accepting it means that the bitterness of sin and resulting death will be removed by those who believe. Wormwood is a poison, and represents the poison of sin. The star is called Wormwood because Jesus has become sin by taking on our sins and dying for us:
2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Bitter waters
Num 5:23 And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water:
Those who who refuse the Gospel message presented by the Third Trumpet will be blotted out of the book of life.
The Third Trumpet is directed at the non-Christian religions and secular world, and 1/3 will respond to the message, those who don't will receive the third plague, and have blood to drink (Rev. 16:4-7)
The Fourth Trumpet
Rev 8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
Sun, moon and stars
Rev 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
The woman of Revelation 12 represents the true and pure church of God, as opposed to the woman of Revelation 17, which is the corrupt apostate church.
The fourth trumpet indicates that only a third part of those claiming to be in the true remnant church will be saved.
The Fifth Trumpet - The First Woe
Rev 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
Rev 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
Rev 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
Rev 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
Rev 9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
Rev 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
Rev 9:7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
Rev 9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
Rev 9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
Rev 9:10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
A star fall from heaven
Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
This star falling to earth in the fifth trumpet is Satan. God's people have been sealed, probation closed after the 4th Trumpet (Rev 9:4). Satan is given power to torment those who have rejected God, but he will not be able to kill them, as he could not kill Job (Job 2:6).
Abaddon - Apollyon
The destroying angel, Satan.
Power to hurt men five months
Satan and his angels will be able to torment the wicked who rejected God for five months, but will not be permitted to kill them.
With the close of probation after the fourth Trumpet, those who rejected God will be left to Satan and his angels, and receive the fifth plague of spiritual and physical blindness and darkness.
The Sixth Trumpet - The Second Woe
Rev 9:12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.
Rev 9:13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
Rev 9:14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
Rev 9:15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.
Rev 9:16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.
Rev 9:17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.
Rev 9:18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
Rev 9:19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.
Rev 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
Rev 9:21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
The four angels bound in the river Euphrates
Satan, knowing his time is short, tries under the sixth trumpet to kill the 1/3 (God's people), but instead an army of the angels of God slays 1/3 of the wicked on the earth.
During the Sixth Trumpet, the wicked realize they have been deceived by Mystery Babylon, and false miracles are performed in order to still deceive them, as indicated by the Sixth Plague (Rev. 16:12-16), but they turn on her and destroy her with fire (Rev. 17:16-18).
The Seventh Trumpet - The Third Woe
Rev 11:14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.
Rev 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
Rev 11:16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,
Rev 11:17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.
Rev 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
Rev 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
The Seventh Trumpet is the second coming of Jesus Christ.
