Collaborative Project:

First Grade, First Grade,

What Do You See?

First grade students contributed to an online book adapted from the children's book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, written by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle.

After reading the book, each student completed the verse "First Grade, First Grade, What do you see? I see a _______ looking at me. The students filled in the blank with a person, place, or thing that is representative of our geographic area. The class chose one of the favorite student page to be send and posted as a page of the online book "First Grade, First Grade, What do you See?"The website is located at Oakland School at Bloomington, Illinois

Incorporating the Project into the Curriculum

The book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?" is a familiar and favorite story of this first grade class. It was a perfect story that we could use for a writing activity. This collaborative project was an ideal way to teach about the various places and what is unique to that region. It has helped my students gain a perspective different from their own.

Students and Teacher Learning Experiences

My students enjoyed this project. This is the first time that I showed the students about the Internet. For many of my students, this is their first time viewing the Internet. I told them that we are able to connect on to the Internet from our classroom. They were fascinated with seeing other first grade students' work. This motivated my students to do their best work since it will be viewed by other students from different places. We voted and chose one picture to submit to Linn McDonald to post. We are anxiously waiting to see the picture.

I also enjoyed this project. I am always looking for meaningful ways to integrate technology in the classroom. This is my first experience working on a collaborative project. It made me aware of the possibilities of how to integrate technology into a primary classroom. I intend to share with other primary grade teachers ways that they can integrate technology into their classroom.
