City bred, I often didn't see the nature of a city in its true dimensions. Only after flying in and out of New York City several times, and passing over the large and medium size metropolises of the rest of the country did I begin to see cities as cellular nodes in the thinly stretched organism of society. These nerve complexes of information, know-how, creativity, communications, criticism and trade are vital to our life.
