THE LATEST ON THE BREIERS

February 5, 2003

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, the Dining and Wine section of the New York Times featured an article by Alex Witchel about Kona Beth Shalom's SHALOHA COOKBOOK and Karen and Morty Breier. You might want to pick up a copy of the Times on that day or go to their web-site www.nytimes.com and click on "Dining and Wine" in the "FEATURES" section.

We are both excited about being interviewed by Alex Witchel, who we showed around Kona and had for lunch at our Dome Home in the Sky. We were photographed by an AP photographer a few days later. It is a fun article. It features Karen's "KONA NOVA" homemade lox. You can see it by clicking below:

You can order a new Millennium Edition of the SHALOHA COOKBOOK by going to the Kona Beth Shalom web-site www.konabethshalom.org and clicking on "COOKBOOK" then clicking on "ORDER FORM". Each book is $18 plus $5 for postage and handling and all money goes to the Kona Beth Shalom Building Fund.

January 9 to 27, 2003

Damien, Hilary and the grandchildren, Lillian and Wesley, came to Hawaii to visit us on January 9. They were to have stayed for nine days, with a planned stay at the Waikaloa Hilton for the last four days. Fortunately, for us, Damien was called away to Bangkok on business, leaving Hilary and the kids with us until he returned on the 25th. We were at the wedding of Karen's nephew on Oahu on the 25th, returning to Kona on the 26th. Damien and his family flew back to Connecticut on the 27th. Here are some shots of all of us during their visit.

Our Ten Day California Trip to Visit Nicole, Steve and Will

We flew from Kona to Oakland, a nice Aloha flight, on October 24, a Thursday. We spent the night at a hotel near the airport, and Steve picked us up the next day. We arrived at the Carter's home in San Anselmo, Marin County, just North of San Francisco, on Friday. We spent the next ten days with the Carter family except for a few side trips. Will, our grandson, cute as can be, wide eyed and attentive, with a smiley disposition, is seven months old. He is a pleasure to be with. He wakes up smiling, keeps himself busy with toys and objects that come to hand, and is full of curiosity and intelligence. Here are some photos we brought back with us:

We baby-sat a few times allowing Steve and Nicole some time alone... here they're going out for a ride:

We spent a day in San Francisco visiting Suzie, an old friend of Karen, and her husband Rudolf. Here we are at their SF apartment after dinner out at a local restaurant:

We took a side trip up the coast along Route 1 to Elk. Steve and Nicole let us use their Miata. Here are some photos of that wonderful trip:

We got a great B & B in Elk, a small town along the coast, about 150 miles north of San Anselmo. The B & B was charming beyond description with a heart-shaped Jacuzzi hot-tub looking out over the edge of the Pacific and a working fireplace. Here's a photo from our B & B room window.

We also found a little chapel along the road and paid it a visit. It was something out of Lord of the Rings. Take a look at the two photos that follow.

Sorry to say I had a little medical problem during my stay but kept it more or less to myself, not wishing to disturb the busy Carter household, desiring our visit to go smoothly, and wanting to Grandparent as expected. When we got back to Kona on November 4, I checked into our Kona hospital and was immediately admitted to the ICU where I was hooked up to an intravenous feeder, received four pints of blood and various other fluids, recovered most of my health, and, after five days was released to continue my recovery at home under the expert care of Karen. I'm about 85% back to normal and feeling fine. Thanks to all my family and friends who were concerned for me, who  prayed for my quick recovery, and who sent me their best.
