NEW THOUGHT WEEKLY

SUNDAY JANUARY 19, 2003 PROGRAM

Latif Bolat, Turkish musician. Plays traditional Turkish instruments and will also  present teaching from the Sufi tradition. "He plays beautiful music and has 2 or 3 cud's that will be on sale. I traveled with him through Turkey last September and had the opportunity to hear him often and to join in his Sufi activities.  Very worth while..."   Rick Schulze

 From Latif Bolet's promotional flyer:
Turkish Folk and Sufi musician Latif Bolat will visit Hawaiian Islands as
part of his world concert tour.  These concerts will present music, poetry,
Sufi stories and images from the ancient land of Turkey.  Latif Bolat plays
Turkish Folk Music and devotional Sufi songs which are called  Ilahi and
Nefes, from the Anatolian peninsula.  The lyrics of Ilahis or Nefeses are
taken largely from the great 13th century mystical poets Rumi and Yunus Emre.
The program also includes Traditional Turkish folk songs as well as ballads
composed by Latif Bolat. Throughout the program, devotional poetry will be
recited from 13th Century Sufi poets Yunus Emre and Rumi, and images of
Turkish people and scenery will be reflected on a screen.
One of the most well-known Turkish musicians in the US, Bolat possesses a
vast repertoire, ranging from Sufi devotional songs and Turkish Folk music to
classical pieces.  His mesmerizing performances draw on ancient texts and
employ traditional instrumentation such as the baglama (long necked lute),
oud and ney flute.  In addition to full schedule of concert, lecture and
workshop engagements at universities and concert halls around the world, he
has made many live audio and television appearances and composed soundtrack
music for the PBS documentary: Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet and George
Lucas's "Young Indiana Jones".

In a world being portrayed as a checkerboard pattern of good and evil, we New Thought practitioners hold to the belief that we are all sparks of the divine, rays of the great spirit, Christ conscious souls, Allah's children and that, with time on our side, we will eventually manifest a healed and  inclusive world in which this truth is its finest expression.

By providing a loving, accepting, non-judgmental community, we at NewThought Center of Hawaii create a sanctuary for the nourishment, development, and evolution of each person's unique spiritual path.
The circle we sit in represents our inclusiveness and our equality. We have no minister. We take turns facilitating, and we minister to each other. In addition to sharing our own spiritual insights, we invite teachers from all wisdom traditions. We invite and honor such variety and in ourselves and in the world around us. We understand that no single source has exclusivity of spiritual truth, health and joy and that there is much to be learned from many of these sources.

We gather every Sunday at 10 a.m. in Kealakekua at Pualani Terrace just south of the Kealakekua Library. You are invited to join the circle.      Morty Breier pres. and board of NTCH.

SMART DOG via Harold Meltzer
Solly visits Abe and sees he has a new dog.
"So what kind of dog is this?", asks Solly.
"He's a Jewish dog," says Abe. "His name is Irving. Watch."
    "Irving," says Abe, "Fetch!"
Irving walks slowly to the door, then turns around, and says
"So why are you talking to me like that? You always order me around like
I'm nothing. And then you make me sleep on the floor, with my arthritis.
Then you give me this ferkakta food with all the salt and fat and you tell
me it's a special diet and it tastes like dreck!  YOU should eat it
yourself!  And do you ever take me for a decent walk?  NO, it's out of the
house, give a pish, and right back home.  Maybe if I could stretch out a
little the sciatica wouldn't kill me so much!"
Solly is amazed and he says to Abe how smart the dog is.
Abe replies, "He may be smart but his hearing isn't good. I said "fetch" and he heard "kvetch."
("kvetch" means "complain" in Yiddish)

WORDS OF WISDOM / QUEST FOR QUOTES

- "When heaven is about to confer a great office upon a man, It first exercises his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil; It exposes him to poverty and confounds all his undertakings. Then it is seen if he is ready."
Moshi via the introduction to "Medicinemaker" by Hank Wesselman (author of "Spirit Walker") who will be presenting at NTCH on Sun. March 16.
- "To the living we owe respect, to the dead, we own only the truth.  Voltaire via Roger Christie

From Celestial Seasoning tea boxes, New Years Eve at Hamakua Ecology Center's "World Chant for Peace" celebration
- "Our deeds still travel with us from afar, and what we have been makes us what we are."       George Eliot
- "Our deeds determine us as much as we determine our deeds."     George Eliot
- "Nothing that was worthy in the past departs; no truth or goodness realized by man ever dies, or can die."  Thos.Carlyle
- "We traverse the world in search of happiness...yet a contented mind brings happiness to us all."              Horace
- "General notions are generally wrong."      Lady Mary Wortley Mantagu
- "Many things which cannot be overcome when they are together, yield themselves up when taken little by little."  Plutarch
- "Maturity only enhances mystery, never decreases it."                        Emily Dickinson

- "Why can't we vote the bastards out?” And the answer is, “Because we didn't even vote the bastards in!”
From "Votescam" by James & Kenneth Collier, a book about electronic vote rigging and computer vote fraud via Roger Christie. “Votescam” will fill in the blanks for anyone who senses their vote is worthless, but doesn't know why. It tracks down, confronts, and calls the names of Establishment thieves who elegantly steal the American vote, Supreme Court Justice who buried the vote fraud evidence, the most powerful female publisher in America who won't permit her newspapers and television stations to expose vote rigging, the Attorney General who jailed James Collier rather than expose the truth; and a cast of weak-kneed and corruptible politicians, lawyers, and newspeople who are entangled in this massive crime and are yet to be held accountable.

- "We can't let what we can't have, interfere with what  we can have."                              Holley Weeks
- "God is a circle; His center is everywhere, His circumference is nowhere."      Blaise Pascal, 1623 -1662 via Larry Morningstar
- " Unless and until we have peace deep within us, we can never hope to have peace in the outer world.
You and I create the world by the 'vibrations' that we offer to it. If we can invoke peace, and then offer it to somebody else,
we will see how peace expands from one to two persons, and gradually to the World at large. Peace will come about in the World
from the perfection of Individuals.    Sri Chinmoy from "The Wings of Joy"  via Judith Lynne

From "Apples Of Gold" compiled by:  Jo Petty, Authors of these sources are unknown. Via Barbara Concoby
- Be careful how you live; you may be the only Bible some people will ever read.
- Life lived just to satisfy yourself never satisfies anybody.
- There is no better exercise for strengthening the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.
- What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
- Character is a victory, not a gift.
- There is no right way to do the wrong thing.
- Good nature will always supply the absence of beauty; but beauty cannot supply the absence of good nature.
- It is often surprising to find what heights may be attained merely by remaining on the level.
- For when the One Great Scorer comes to write of you, He writes not that you lost or won, but how you played the game.
From "Apples Of Gold" compiled by:  Jo Petty, Authors of these sources are unknown. Via Barbara Concoby

- "We will be working very consciously with clearing, aligning and activating the Christ Consciousness Grid for
ourselves and for the planet. This is so important right now to transform the vibrational frequencies of our world from fear into love. The Teachers have said that as we do this work from the Big Island, we can dramatically affect the consciousness of the whole planet. The time is NOW for us to manifest a new harmony of unconditional love - for ourselves and for the
world.                              Judith Lynn, sound healer announcing "sound healing intensives" at end of January. 987-8099 for info.

MISCELLANEOUS

CREED OF PEACE
I err when I proudly exercise my intelligence to the disadvantage of my fellow man.
I err when I distort others opinions which differ from my own.
I err when I show disregard for the rights and properties of others.
I err when I covet what another has honestly acquired.
I err when I seek to maintain my superiority of position by depriving others of their opportunity of advancement.
I err if I imagine my kin and myself to be privileged people.
I err if I believe a heritage entitles me to monopolize the resources of nature.
I err when I think other people must think and live as I do.
I err when I make success in life solely dependent upon power, fame and riches.
I err when I think the minds of people should be regulated by force rather than reason.
I err when I believe that the God I conceive is the one others must accept.
I err when I think that a land of man's birth must necessarily by the place of his livelihood.
Modified from "Creed of Peace" by Ralph Lewis by replacing "am guilty of war" with "err."

PERSONALS:

- The owner of my current residence returns to the island January 20th, and I am eager to discover a new home for myself. It should be one that provides a pleasant and supportive place for me to do my sound healing work, both in private sessions and in small groups. I would prefer a cooler elevation anywhere from above the airport southward to Captain Cook. A two bedroom home with an ocean view would be nice. Actually a long term housesit with a baby grand piano in good working order would be really great! (Well, why not! we're talking about manifesting something wonderful here.) If anyone knows of anything that would be appropriate, please call me (Judith Lynne) at 987-8099. Mahalo nui loa!

- I am looking for an ohana or apartment to rent starting in January. I am also open to  a "care taking" situation.
I need a place that will accept my cat! I'd like a place with a washer and dryer, in the area off of Ali'i near the
Keauhou Beach Hotel or Mauka, or Capt. Cook area or Holualoa  or as far north as the Palisades.
I'm willing to pay $500-$600.  Tigerpawpercussion@turquoise.net

- Seeking a space to rent in a private garden or land to put up my tent with access to flowing water near a street in Kealakekua, Captain Cook, Kailua or Honaunau. Susanne;  anancy4webfairy@yahoo.com

I will be looking for a new HOUSEMATE as of April 1. I have a great 3 bedroom house alongside the stream in Niulii, just before the turn-off to Keokea Beach (past Hawi and Kapaau, 2 miles before the end of the road at Pololu). My housemate has 1 bedroom, primary use of a separate bathroom, and a screened-in carport which includes a separate cooking area. The rent is $425 month plus $75 for utilities. Whoever shares this space with me needs to know that I am gone a lot and when I go away I sublet my half of the house, so you would have a variety of housemates. I'm looking for someone who doesn't smoke and is reasonably quiet.
My half of the house will be available to SUBLET FROM MARCH 1-8 for $175 and from APRIL 1 to THE END OF JUNE OR JULY (not sure yet) for $500 month including utilities. My phone number is 889-0040.
I will be out of town from Jan. 30 to Feb 22. I already have my place sublet for that time, but I'm mentioning it because I won't be able to interview people during that time. (I'll be teaching in Australia - I'm quite excited!)  a hui ho

SPIRITUAL MESSAGE

TRUE LOVE
From Steve Goodier's "One Minute Can Change a Life"  via Judith Lynne

How easy it is to confuse love with passion! One father said of his teenaged
son, "I don't know if he's in love or in heat!"  Feelings of attraction can
change more quickly than the seasons, but love, in its truest form, is
greater than feelings.

Love is what Mr. and Mrs. Strauss shared.  Mrs. Isadore Strauss was one of
the few first class women passengers to go down with the Titanic in 1912, and
she drowned because she could not bear to leave her husband.

They remained calm throughout the excitement of the sinking vessel. They both
aided frightened women and children to find places aboard lifeboats.
Finally, Mr. Strauss, who had repeatedly urged his wife to claim a spot
safely aboard a lifeboat, forced her to enter one.

She was seated but a moment, however, when she sprang up and climbed back on
deck before he could stop her.  There, she caught his arm, snuggling it
familiarly against her side, and exclaimed, "We have been long together for a
great many years.  We are old now.  Where you go, I will go."

For them, true love was about commitment.  And it was about faithfulness.
And sacrifice.  Not everyone finds such love in another person -- though it
is a beautiful thing when it occurs.

But a committed and faithful love can always be found in another realm. It
exists at the very core of authentic spirituality.  This is a fact that whole
and happy people build their lives around.

AFFIRMATION

HAPPINESS IS NOW via Nan Howell

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a
baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and
we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that we have
teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that
stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his
or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we are able to go on a nice
vacation or when we retire.  The truth is there's no better time to be happy
than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with
challenges.

It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Happiness is
the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because
you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with ...
and remember that time waits for no one.
    So, stop waiting ...
Until your car or home is paid off.
Until you get a new car or home.
Until your kids leave the house.
Until you go back to school.
Until you finish school.
Until you lose 10 lbs.
Until you gain 10 lbs.
Until you get married.
Until you get a divorce.
Until you have kids.
Until you retire.
Until summer..
Until spring.
Until winter.
Until fall.
Until you die.
There is no better time than right now to be happy. Happiness is a journey, not
a destination.
So work like you don't need money, love like you've never been
hurt, and, dance like no one's watching.

READER FEEDBACK
- Re: God's voice mail.     I certainly hope that if heaven is run in English, the voice will say,"Your call will be answer in the order IN WHICH it was received." People have been hearing "the order it was received' for so long that they don't notice that it's incorrect.      AB

- Would it be unkind to point out to AB that God's voice mail would have said "you're call will be ANSWERED..."  The typo is as funny/or serious as the point the AB wants to make about the proper use of the language.         Ted
