                                NEW THOUGHT CENTER OF HAWAII
By providing a loving, accepting, non-judgmental community, we at NewThought Center of Hawaii create a sanctuary for the nourishment, development, and evolution of each person's unique spiritual path.
The circle we sit in represents our inclusiveness and our equality. We have no minister. We take turns facilitating, and we minister to each other. In addition to sharing our own spiritual insights, we invite teachers from all wisdom traditions. We invite and honor such variety and in ourselves and in the world around us. We understand that no single source has exclusivity of spiritual truth, health and joy and that there is much to be learned from many of these sources.
We gather every Sunday at 10 a.m. in Kealakekua at Pualani Terrace just south of the Kealakekua Library. You are invited to join the circle.                                         Morty Breier pres. and board of NTCH.

HUMOR

SILENT DEBATE BETWEEN THE RABBI AND THE POPE

Several centuries ago, the Pope decreed that all the Jews had to convert or
leave Italy. There was a huge outcry from the Jewish community, so the Pope
offered a deal. He would have a religious debate with the leader of the
Jewish community. If the Jews won, they could stay in Italy; if the Pope
won, they would have to leave.
The Jewish people met and picked an aged but wise Rabbi, Moishe, to
represent them in the debate. However, as Moishe spoke no Italian and the
Pope spoke no Yiddish, they all agreed that it would be a "silent" debate.
On the chosen day, the Pope and Rabbi Moishe sat opposite each other for a
full minute before the Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers.
Rabbi Moishe looked back and raised one finger.
Next the Pope waved his finger around his head.
Rabbi Moishe pointed to the ground where he sat.
The Pope then brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine.
Rabbi Moishe pulled out an apple.
With that, the Pope stood up and declared that he was beaten, that Rabbi
Moishe was too clever and that the Jews could stay.
Later, the Cardinals met with the Pope, asking what had happened.
The Pope said, "First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity.
He responded by holding up one finger to remind me that there is still only
one God common to both our beliefs.
Then, I waved my finger to show him that God was all around us. He
responded by pointing to the ground to show that God was also right here with us.
I pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us of all our
sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of the original sin. He had me
beaten and I could not continue."
Meanwhile, the Jewish community were gathered around Rabbi Moishe.
    "What happened?" they asked.
"Well," said Moishe, "First he said to me that we had three days to get
out of Italy, so I said to him: Up yours!
Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Jews, and I
said  to him, Mr Pope, we're staying right here."
"And then what," asked a woman.
"Who knows?" said Moishe, "he took out his lunch so I took out mine."

WORDS OF WISDOM / QUEST FOR QUOTES

- "If the secret sorrows of everyone could be read on their forehead, how many
who now cause envy would suddenly become the objects of pity." Italian proverb

- "If one is without kindness, how can one be called a human being?" Sarada Devi

- "If we spend all our time in the past, the future will be our past."

- "We stand looking out upon the new horizon of the 21st Century....there is no better time to review age old challenges with new thinking that peace is not only the absence of violence, but the presence of a higher evolution of human awareness with respect, trust and integrity toward humankind. Our founding fathers recognized that peace was one of the highest duties of the newly organized free and independent  states. But too often, we have overlooked the long-term solution of peace for instant gratification  of war. This continued downward spiral of violence must stop to ensure that future generations will  live in peace and harmony."
Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Courtesy of Latifa Amdur via Larry Morningstar
- "You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of
discussion."                 Plato, philosopher (427-347 BCE)

"We can't put a question mark where the Lord has put a period."         Wife of deceased 32 year old Montana Hutterite (conservative religious sect)  farmer whose husband was just killed in a farm tractor accident, from "The American West" by Richard Avedon

Una Greenaway,  Hawaii Genetic Engineering Action Network
- "The County Council through five hours of testimony and negotiations passed a resolution that will prevent the planting of GMO coffee in the North and South Kona Districts until a protocol and regulatory process is put in place by the Kona Coffee Industry.  Before we could get the five votes necessary to pass the resolution, two  other parts were added. It says that the County Council is in support of the GMO papaya growers and supports the research and development of GMO coffee (in the lab of course) We know that this resolution has very little teeth, but we still consider it a small victory to get five people on our Council to vote in this direction.  It can also help us with the next battle of getting regulatory changes made on the state level.
- "There is agreement that something must be done to combat the Pioneer Seed Company, owned by Dupont, that is sponsoring a program "Bringing Biotech Into the Classroom." After highlighting the benefits of Genetically Modified crops, the representative gives each elementary school child genetically modified corn which she or he is instructed to plant in her or his very own backyard. On all of the Hawaiian islands, but the Big Island, this program is already in full swing.
- "At the Earth Summit in Johanasburgh, the rest of the world voted against the WTO having more power over the environment. The United States was the only one who voted for it."
Una Greenaway,  Hawaii Genetic Engineering Action Network

- "Nothing that grieves us can be called little: by the eternal laws of proportion a child's
loss of a doll and a king's loss of a crown are events of the same size."             Mark Twain

- "What is important is to look upon everyone  with a deep sense of honor, because
your own heart and mind  are influenced by the way you look at others. If we could
do just that, we would be rendering the greatest service to our fellow beings."
Swami Muktananda Courtesy of Liz Randol Larry Morningstar

- "Most everyone we meet asks the same question..... "Why would you leave paradise for the desert?"  The truth is that paradise is in our heart, so no matter where we are, we live in Paradise!"                  Eleana & Isaiah from their new home in Palm Springs after leaving Kona

- Islandwide, 88,499 people registered to vote. Only 35,535 ballots were cast, a turnout of 40.15%... And each vote not cast fertilizes apathy and the mediocrity of representation it fosters.                                           WHT editorial of Sept. 25 titled "The cycle of apathy in Hawaii politics."
- "Imagination is the true magic carpet."                                Norman Vincent Peale
- "The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose."                          Hada Bejar
- "The smell always stays in the hand of the one that gives the stinkweed."
                                                                                                                                Judy Rothstein's corollary.
- "Top cats often begin as underdogs."  Bernard Meltzer

MISCELLANEOUS

Oliver North being questioned by Sen. Al Gore at Iran-Contra hearings:
G "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"
N "Yes, I did, Sir."
G "Isn't that just a little excessive?"
N "No, sir."
G "No? And why not?"
N "Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir."
G "Threatened? By whom?"
N "By a terrorist, sir."
G "Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"
N "His name is Osama bin Laden, sir."
At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it
G "Why are you so afraid of this man?"
N "Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of."
G "And what do you recommend we do about him?"
N "Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to
eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."
The senator disagreed with this approach.
Via Stanley Leffler

Terrorist pilot Mohammed Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis  captured,
tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement  with the Palestinians in 1993,
Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners". However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands.
The American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that all prisoners be released.
Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane
into Tower One of the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified. It was censored in the US from
all later reports.

SPIRITUAL MESSAGE

ST. THERESA PRAYER
May today there be peace within.
May you trust your  highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to  be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that  are born of faith
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been
given to  you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into our bones, and allow  your soul the freedom to sing, and dance.
It is there for each and  every one of you.                                            Via Joi Kathara

AFFIRMATION

The Lord is my shepherd. As I walk through the fear of my own mortality I'm strengthened by faith in a Power that's within me and beside me. I can depend on its changeless principles. There are no final endings, and fear is just a shadow through which I may pass unharmed.
Jesse Jennings explaining the 23rd Psalm in which God's protecting presence is celebrated, from his column in the Sept. 2002 Science of Mind magazine.
