RAW FOOD RECIPE
"Today's recipe is Red-Cabbage Caraway Slaw. Not
only is it delicious and good for you, it is easy and fast to make.
Here is a good hint: red cabbage will keep for some
time in your refrigerator, so have some on hand for when you are
hungry or have unexpected guests.
Here is another hint: cabbage in particular is a
heavily sprayed crop, therefore you should
be sure to only eat organic cabbage. (If you are interested in making your
own healthful
raw sauerkraut The Raw Gourmet tells you how to make it, step by step)
RED CABBAGE CARAWAY SLAW
This is a highly flavored dish. It will keep for 4-5 days in the
refrigerator.
6 cups thinly sliced red cabbage
1 large onion, sliced very thin
1 tablespoon caraway seeds
2 teaspoons Bragg's liquid Aminos, or Nama Shoyu, or Tamari
1 teaspoon sea salt
In a bowl, combine the cabbage and onion; toss. Sprinkle the caraway
seeds, liquid Aminos, and sea salt evenly over the vegetables. Knead and
toss the salad, crushing the vegetables in your hands for 5-6 minutes.
(You might prefer to use protective kitchen gloves to avoid staining your
hands)"

EDITORIAL
With the passing of Rep. Patsy
Mink and Sen. Paul Wellstone, the U.S. Congress has lost two of its most
passionate liberal voices. These quotes about Paul Wellstone indicate what a
"liberal" stands for, and why Paul and Patsy will be missed.
"Paul Wellstone was one of a
kind. He was a man of principle and conviction, in a world that has too
little of either. He was dedicated to helping the little guy, in a business
dominated by the big guys. We who had the privilege of working with him hope
that he will be remembered as he lived every day: as a champion for
people." Jeff Blodgett, Senator Wellstone's
campaign manager
"the evening when he came back to
the Capitol well past midnight to visit with the
cleaning staff and tell them how much he appreciated their efforts."
James W. Ziglar, a Republican who was sergeant at arms of the
Senate from 1998 to 2001 and who is now commissioner of the Immigration and
Naturalization Service, remembering Sen. Wellstone.
"But you know what?" he says, "They already have
great representation in Washington. It's the rest of the people
that need it." From a Wellstone
political ad referring to "the Enron's of the world" and oil and
drug companies that he doesn't represent.
"Today, the nation lost its most
passionate advocate for fairness and justice for all. He had an
intense passion and enormous ability to reach out, touch and improve
the lives of the people he served so brilliantly."
Sen. Edward Kennedy
"Today the state of Minnesota has suffered a
deep and penetrating loss, with all of us suffering from the numbing
experiences of our nation's recent tragedies. This loss seems especially
cruel for those of us who knew and worked with Sen. Wellstone, his
dedication to his state and
nation was profound."
Gov. Jesse Ventura
" ...Despite the marked contrast between
Paul's and my views on matters of government and politics, he was my
friend and I was his. He unfailingly represented his views
eloquently and emphatically. Paul Wellstone was a courageous
defender of his beliefs." Sen. Jesse Helms
"Wellstone was the real deal -- an unreconstructed
progressive liberal -- and in a flash, he's gone. ...Wellstone seemed like
the last of a disappearing breed -- a full-blooded
liberal Democrat, unabashedly unashamed of the dreaded "L" word,
a
proud banner-bearing progressive. ...over a twelve year period, he
garnered arguably the most liberal voting record of anyone in the
Senate... Domenici's appearance on CNN this afternoon to comment on
Wellstone's death carried more eloquence than any words could. He tried to
speak, but was overcome with emotion, unable to say a word -- and Domenici,
one
of the most respected and powerful conservatives in Washington, broke down
in tears. ...Wellstone was not merely respected, he was beloved.
We suspect they won't play Domenici's emotional moment -- which would be a
shame. In a political atmosphere that is venomous, in a city that can show
little mercy, Domenici's tears spoke volumes about Paul Wellstone."
Gene Gaudette, publisher, apj.us (American Political Journal)
"Paul Wellstone stood five feet five inches in his stocking feet, a
trait that caused many persons to underestimate his energy and
effectiveness. But in terms of moral fiber, bravery and honor, he
stands tall as one of America's true giants."
"Paul Wellstone, American
Giant" by Tamara Baker American Politics Journal October 25, 2002
"This race is going to be a case study of
whether you can maintain liberal, progressive positions and win in this
country in 2002." Paul Wellstone as he campaigns
among Laotian immigrants on a sunny spring morning in St. Paul.
" Paul Wellstone is a hunted man. Minnesota's senior senator
is not just another Democrat on White House political czar Karl Rove's
target list, in an election year when the Senate balance of power
could be decided by the voters of a single state. Rather, getting rid of
Wellstone is a
passion for Rove, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush and the special-interest
lobbies that fund the most sophisticated political operation ever
assembled by a presidential administration. "There are people in the
White House who wake up in the morning thinking about how they will
defeat Paul Wellstone," a senior Republican aide confides. "This
one is political and personal for them."
"Paul Wellstone, Fighter" by
John Nichols, Posted May 9th, 2002, in The Nation
http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20020527&s=nichols
"They have made it very clear that if they could beat one
Democrat this year, it would be Paul Wellstone," "Paul
gets under their skin." Minnesota political
consultant Richman about how beating Wellstone would be the sweetest
Bush administration win.
"Paul Wellstone was a man of deep convictions.
He was a plainspoken fellow who did his best for his state and for his
country."
George W. Bush
"For years, progressives have argued that Democrats will win
big only when they distinguish themselves from Republicans on fundamental
economic and social justice issues. Here is
Wellstone--arguably the most prominent elected progressive in the
country--doing just that."
Gene Gaudette, publisher, apj.us (American Political Journal)
"Paul's a controversial guy. He's the little guy who takes on
the big guys. That is not something the political process is designed to
reward these days. If you take strong stands you put yourself at risk--and
Paul takes more strong stands on more issues than just about
anyone else." Myron Orfield, a Minnesota
Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) state senator
"Still, Wellstone has few rivals on the left side of the
Senate aisle.
Congressional Quarterly says no senator had a more consistent record of
voting against Bush Administration proposals during the new President's
first year. Wellstone racks up 100 percent ratings from the AFL-CIO,
Americans for Democratic Action and the League of Conservation Voters. He
is the veteran grassroots organizer hailed by consumer activists for
waging a three-year battle to temper the draconian "bankruptcy
reform"
bill pushed by the credit card industry. He is the former college
professor who has been the chief Senate voice of those who maintain that
education-reform initiatives must involve better measures of success than
standardized tests. He is the crusader for disability rights and
healthcare reform who--since he was diagnosed in February as having a
mild form of multiple sclerosis--is in demand not merely as an advocate
but as a very human example of what the struggles are about. The
Minneapolis Star Tribune recently described him as "the go-to guy to
advance the causes of educators, environmentalists, consumer and labor
groups, the elderly and the poor."
Gene Gaudette, publisher, apj.us (American Political Journal)
"The President can come in. The Vice President can come in. The big
money can come in. But
I'm not worried. I've got you with me," Wellstone roars, as he
rallies his troops. "I am a proud progressive senator from
Minnesota. I am a proud liberal senator. I am a labor senator. I am
an environmentalist senator. I am an education senator. I am a
civil rights senator. And that's how we win this election. That's the
politics that wins this year."
