                                                ABOUT NEW THOUGHT CENTER OF HAWAII

   By providing a loving, accepting, non-judgmental community, we at NewThought Center of Hawaii create a sanctuary for the nourishment, development, and evolution of each person's unique spiritual path.
    The circle we sit in represents our inclusiveness and our equality. We have no minister. We take turns facilitating, and we minister to each other. In addition to sharing our own spiritual insights, we invite teachers from all wisdom traditions. We invite and honor such variety and in ourselves and in the world around us. We understand that no single source has exclusivity of spiritual truth, health and joy and that there is much to be learned from many of these sources.
    We gather every Sunday at 10 a.m. in Kealakekua at Pualani Terrace just south of the Kealakekua Library. You are invited to join the circle.                                             Morty Breier pres. and board of NTCH.

HUMOR

HMO RECOMMENDATION
    Mrs. Ward goes to the doctor's office to collect her husband's test results.
    The lab tech says to her, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but there has been a bit of a mix-up and we have a problem. When we sent the samples from your husband to the lab, the samples from another Mr. Ward were sent as well, and we are now uncertain which one is your husband's.  Frankly, the results are either bad or terrible.
    "What do you mean?" Mrs. Ward asked.
    "Well, one Mr. Ward has tested positive for Alzheimer's and the other for AIDS.  We can't tell which is your husband."
    "That's terrible!  Can we do the test over?" questioned Mrs. Ward.
    "Normally, yes.  But you have an HMO, and they won't pay for these expensive tests more than once."
    "Well, what am I supposed to do now?"
    "The HMO recommends that you drop your husband off in the middle of town. If he finds his way home ..... don't sleep with him."                       Via Barbara Concoby

AN HMO MANAGER AT THE PEARLY GATES

              Two doctors and an HMO manager died and lined up at the pearly gates for admission to heaven. St. Peter asked them to identify themselves.                                                                                                                                                                                                               One doctor stepped forward and said, "I was a pediatric spine surgeon and helped kids overcome their deformities." St. Peter said, "You can enter."                                                                                                                                                                                                          The second doctor said, "I was a psychiatrist. I helped people rehabilitate themselves." St. Peter also invited him in.                       The third applicant stepped forward and said, "I was an HMO manager. I helped people get cost-effective health care." St. Peter said, "You can come in, too."                                                                                                                                                                                              But as the HMO manager walked by, St. Peter added, "You can stay three days. After that, you can go to Hell.

WORDS OF WISDOM / QUEST FOR QUOTES

From Shanti Devi's Dec. 8 NT presentation
- "One of every 5.5 people is a Muslim, 20% of whom are Arabs.
- Islam is the noun, Muslim is the adjective.
- Islam, is a monotheistic religion which means "peace through surrender to God."
- The 5 pillars of Islam are:
        No God but Allah and Mohammad is his prophet.
        Ramadan (fast all day for a whole month)
        Give to charity
        Pray five times a day
        Hajj (go to Meccan at least once in a lifetime(
- No separation between religion and state. Religion is the law of the community. Surrender to orthodox political leaders.
- Sufism is the mystical inner side of Islam and have a tradition of following a charismatic teacher. Mainstream Muslims accept the society of their times and practice their religion within their society. Islamists (right wing fundamentalists) see society as corrupted by secularism and seek to resolve all problems by strictly following the Koran."                                Via  Shanti Devi

- "Live Aloha ... an expression of a deep sense of belonging to a community and caring for each other.  Each of us can
improve our community by our individual and collective actions. Each of us has that responsibility.  If we act
with courtesy and caring, the Hawaii we value will be strengthened.

                                From the Dec. 6 Hawaii County Weekly Report. See "Attachment" section below and the "Attach" above for full text

- "God created human beings because he was disappointed in the monkeys.      Mark Twain

- "I offer you peace,    I offer you friendship.  I offer you love.   I hear your needs.  I see your beauty.   I feel your feelings.  My wisdom comes from a Higher Source.  I honor that Source in you."                     Ghandi's prayer via Saleeni Ki

- "The fact that astronomies change while the stars abide is a true analogy of every realm of human life and thought, religion not least of all. No existent theology can be a final formulation of spiritual truth.                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Harry Emerson Fosdick, preacher and author (1878-1969)  via AWA

Former president Jimmy Carter                                                                                                                                                                                                   "One of the things that the United States government has not done is to try to comply with and enforce international efforts targeted to prohibit the arsenals of biological weapons that we ourselves have."Jimmy Carter on CNN's Larry King Live Fri Nov.15 2002
- Carter also called for more stringent efforts by Washington "to reduce and enforce the agreement to eliminate chemical weapons, and the same way with nuclear weapons."
- "The major powers need to set an example... Quite often the big countries that are responsible for the peace of the world set a very poor example for those who might hunger for the esteem or the power or the threats that they can develop from nuclear weapons themselves... I don't have any doubt that it's that kind of atmosphere that has led to the nuclearization, you might say, of India and Pakistan."                                                                                                                                                Jimmy Carter
- "The United States gives only one one-thousandth of its gross national product for international assistance, while the average European country gives four times as much. Every time an American gives a dollar, a citizen of Norway gives $17.
- "Foreign aid in this country has a bad name, but in other countries, it's a right thing for the government to do."                                - "The United States has given many nations around the world cause for resentment and scorn."
- "There is a sense that the United States has become too arrogant, too dominant, too self-centered, proud of our wealth, believing that we deserve to be the richest and most powerful and influential nation in the world.""I think they feel that we don't really care about them, which is quite often true."                                         Former president & Noble Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter.

- "We all have limitations. It is the struggle to overcome them that is the measure of who we are."     Ed Clark, Puna resident                  - "Set your own goals and measure yourself against them."                                                                            Ed Clark                                         - "You can be more persuasive in simply stating your own views, than in arguing a point at length. KISS: keep it simple...is a great motto.                                                                                                                                                                    Ed Clark

- " God, save me from your people." bumber sticker

- "It can be very fearful for people to go against the prevailing notion of things even though the prevailing notion is killing them.                                                                                                                                             Neal Donald Walsch, author "Conversations with God."                - "Happiness makes up in height what it lacks in length.  Robert Frost
- "No mistake is more common and more fatuous than appealing to logic in cases which are beyond her jurisdiction.                                                                                                                                                                             Samuel Butler, writer (1835-1902)

- "Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."                                                         Samuel Ullman courtesy of Mitch Battros via L Morningstar
- "This is the most profound spiritual truth I know: that even when we're most sure that love can't conquer all, it seems to anyway."                                                                                                                Anne Lamott via L. Morningstar

- "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever-approaching thunder, which will destroy us, too. I can feel the suffering of millions, and yet,  if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again.  In the meantime, I must uphold my ideals,  for perhaps the time will come  when I shall be able to carry them out."                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Anne Frank from "The Diary of Ann Frank" via Larry Morningstar

RUDYARD KIPLING'S VERSE

                            IF

"BROTHER SQUARE-TOES" - REWARDS AND FAIRIES

If you and keep your head when all about you
   Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
   But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
   Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
   And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
   If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
   And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
   Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
   And stoop and build `em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
   And risk it on one turn of pitch-and toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
   And never breathe a work about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
   To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
   Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
   Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor living friends can hurt you,
   If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
   With sixty seconds `worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
   And-which is more-you'll be a Man, My son!
