This title and the piece itself, paralleling as it does its better known expression "stream of consciousness", is indeed a meditation on the mind. The trick is to recognize the mind's uncanny ability to forever produce a tangled tapestry of thoughts and to look with equanimity at this process. The east sees the mind as a tree full of drunken monkeys. This Mandala presents the mind's proclivity in a rather lovelier metaphor, intertwining ribbons of color, but indeed, the lesson is the same, to view it, rise above it.
