Makakilo Elementary School PTSO Annual Meeting and Bingo Night
:The Makakilo Elementary School PTSO had a very successful Bingo night and annual meeting on September 2, 1999 - over 100 people attended. A big mahalo to Hawaiian Water Park, Hawaiian Super Prix, Dole Pineapple, and everyone else who donated prizes to help our school. Over the next year we will be working on upgrading and improving the playground equipment to meet national standards for safety and accessibility. You will see some school playgrounds fenced off until they are modified to meet the current standards. Suk and I have been working with an architect to come up with a plan for the playground at Makakilo Elementary to submit to the PTSO. Aloha Flea Market:
The Aloha Stadium Commission voted last Thursday, September 9, 1999, to not renew the contract of Edward Medeiros to run the flea market operation. Senator Sam Slom and I were the only two legislators to testify. Everyone who did testify supported Mr. Medeiros. Several hundred swap meet vendors were there to support Ed Medeiros. No one testified in support of what the Commission actually decided. Ed Medeiros built the swap meet over 20 years and now the state is taking over his business. All I know is that Medeiros pays the State $3.8 million a year, and the Stadium Authority is seeking bids that will earn them only $3 million a year. Something is wrong with this picture. My family and I were vendors at the swap meet at one time and we thought Mr. Medeiros was doing a good job.
Modernizing the Civil Service:
People sometimes wonder what a legislator does between sessions. I am working with the Labor Committee in meetings and seminars to modernize the civil service system. We are looking into broader job classifications, better training, a cafeteria plan for benefits, improving recruitment, etc. You can follow along by going to the following website:

What I did during Summer Vacation:
As a member of the Finance Committee, I am responsible for reviewuating all bills that raise or spend money. This summer we have done site visits to schools on Maui and the Big Island. Later this month we go to Kauai to look at the situation there. Our colleagues from the other islands expect us from Oahu to visit their islands and get familiar with their concerns - just as we take them around Oahu so they know our problems. Similarly, I and the other members of the Transportation Committee will be visiting harbors, airports and road projects on all islands.
9th Annual Heritage Festival at Hawaii's Plantation Village:
The annual Heritage Festival at Hawaii's Plantation Village will be October 2 and 3. See flyer.
Hawaiian Railway Society - Foodland and Sack n Save:
We have a unique part of history in our community - the Hawaiian Railway Society. From September 8 to 30, Foodland and Sack n Save will match contributions made to the Hawaiian Railway Society dollar for dollar. See the attached flyer for details.
Environmental Justice Workshop:
The third Environmental Justice Workshop will be held October 2, 1999, at Campbell High School Cafeteria, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This meeting will focus on protecting our beaches, limu restoration, and working with other groups to improve our community. October is Children & Youth Month:
Attached is the calendar of Children & Youth Month events. Those of us in the Legislative Keiki Caucus ask all of you to participate, have some fun, and celebrate Hawaii's keiki.
