Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to SB 957, SD2 HD1 CD1, relating to Motor Vehicle Insurance.
This bill forces the taxpayers to provide free automobile insurance to those on public assistance. Let me repeat - if you are on public assistance the State of Hawaii will give you free car insurance. This is the sort of law that lets people call us the Peoples Republic of Hawaii.
The tragic irony here is that the program is run by the Human Services Department. This is the department that can't find missing children or protect them from abuse. But we have money to pay for car insurance. Our priorities are all wrong.
Let's give bus passes to those on public assistance and spend the savings to protect children from abuse.
