The Honorable Daniel K. Akaka
United States Senate
300 Ala Moana Boulevard, Room 3-106
Honolulu, Hawaii 96850

Dear Senator Akaka,

Last evening, the law firm of Tam and Stanford (808-522-9111) held a public information meeting at Kaleiopuu School in Village Park to present the results of their health survey to the community. My detailed notes are attached for your information. Toxicologist James Dahlgren, M.D., stressed that his report was preliminary, not definitive. However, his opinion was that the results were disturbing and merited further scientific study. Basically, the survey results indicated a higher than normal incidence of sinusitis, asthma, systemic lupus, miscarriage, learning disabilities, and breast cancer among Village Park residents.

I am convinced that the people in Kunia, Royal Kunia, and Village Park deserve a government funded scientific study of the effects of water, air and soil borne contaminants on their health. The community needs your help to get the EPA and ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Dep't of Health and Human Services) involved. It seems fairly clear at this point that the Del Monte Superfund site has contaminated the Village Park and Royal Kunia areas.

It seems ironic that the President this week declared almost the entire East Coast a disaster area, in advance. Would you please ask him to add Village Park, Kunia, and Royal Kunia to the list?

Please contact me at 808-586-8500 if I can be of any further assistance.

Sincerely,

Mark Moses
Representative
42nd District
