Makakilo Elementary School Incident – Pesticide Fumes
On Tuesday the 19th of September students at Makakilo began complaining their eyes were bothering them and they were having difficulty breathing. As Police, Fire and ambulances responded, Fire Department personnel tracked down the problem, which turned out to be a neighbor who had sprayed
a legal pesticide earlier that morning. Fire Department, State Health Department, the Compliance Coordinator, and the Contaminated Substance team all responded to the application site. The incident was handled in an orderly and efficient manner. There was no panic at the school, and children in the affected classroom (Special Education) were taken to the air-conditioned library and assessed. As I talked to students they appeared irritated by the fumes, but not seriously ill. The ambulances transported 4 of the students, who were observed and released. My compliments to all the personnel at the school, and all others involved, for their handling of this incident.
Makakilo Community Association Ho’olaule’a
On Sunday, September 17, my family and I enjoyed a fun-filled day at the Ho’olaulea, which was held at the Kapolei Regional Park. There was free music and entertainment, hula and other Polynesian dance. Many groups sold crafts, and food booths were plentiful. Great fun was had by all!
OMPO Policy Committee Meeting September 14, 2000
I moved for a resolution to direct the OMPO Executive Director to implement a revised schedule, within one week, for the 2025 Oahu Regional Transportation Plan (ORTP) development, which will reduce current delays and allow for Federal Transit Administration and Federal Highway Administration certification as expeditiously as possible. The current ORTP expires on 30 November 2000. Delays past November 30 means no approval of:
The motion passed unanimously.
Soccer Complex
On Saturday, September 2, the Grand Opening of the Waipio Soccer Complex was held, providing
19 regulation fields, including a lighted 3000-seat stadium. On opening day, the full size regulation
fields were lined depending on the size of the players, and around 300 games were held that day.
We have been planning this complex for 6 years and were happy last year to see construction of the
288.3 acre, $12.5 million complex begin, and that evening we held a ceremony in the stadium, and
after our remarks we had an Olympic style torch lighting followed by a grand fire works display.
Legislators Back To School Day
During the 2000 session, the Hawaii State Legislature adopted House Concurrent Resolution No. 81, HD1, Declaring the Second Tuesday of September as Legislator's Back-to-School Day in Hawaii. Legislators participated in the Back-to-School Day educational program, during the week of September 11-15.
On Monday, September 11, I had the privilege of visiting the classrooms of teachers Mel Habon,
Betsy Kojima, and Kris Kurokawa at Ewa Elementary School.
On Tuesday September 12, I visited the classrooms of teachers Pat Ishihara, Karen Meyer, Peggy Pavao, and Christina Shioi at Kapolei Middle School.
On September 19th I visited the classroom of teacher Traci Dolin at Kaleiopuu Elementary.
In addition to educating our keiki on our governmental system, this was a great opportunity to talk to teachers, students, and staff about various concerns regarding their classrooms, school, and community.

About 200 students and adult advisers representing the Leeward District are attending the Leadership Training Workshop at Camp Erdman in Mokuleia. This year's leadership Camp is scheduled for September 20-22.
