Report to the Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board No. 34
Kapolei Middle School Opens:
The Kapolei Middle School just opened. This is a modern and impressive facility with 5 computers in every classroom for the students, a laptop computer for each teacher, and about 50 more computers in the library and computer lab. My son started 6th grade and loves the school! I personally wish to thank all the PTSA volunteers, and HPD, who joined me out by the Middle School morning and afternoon for the first six days of school making sure our keiki could safely get to and from school. Mahalo to all the drivers for their safe driving and care for our children. We all had fun and must do it again next year to remind all of us that school is open with a large, visible, group of parents getting involved.
The Kapolei High School is under construction; the Police Station is almost done; the Family Courts will be moving to Kapolei; and the Medical Center is about ready to open. Coming soon will be a Jack in the Box, a Burger King, and other commercial developments. Our community is growing and improving every day.
Kapolei Library:
Recently, Steve Loring (President), Reverend John Kinyon (Vice-President), and I (Advisor), of the Friends of Kapolei Library met with State Librarian Virginia Lowell in my office at the State Capitol. We discussed the plans for a 66,000 square foot Kapolei Library and Central Distribution Facility. Money has been appropriated to begin construction and this week I met with the Governor's Chief of Staff to further discuss the issue. Bids are expected to go out next February. Our community needs this project, and it will help the economy.
The State Librarian does require additional funding to staff the library and fill the shelves with books. You have heard the Governor's recent statements about having a budget shortfall in the next several years. If we really want a library in our community we have to work together and persuade the Governor, the Legislature and the Board of Education to find the money to operate Kapolei Library. Join Friends of Kapolei Library by contacting my office at 586-8500, fax 586-8504, or e-mail:
