Volunteer groups - such as the Hawai`i Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Boy Scouts of America - have made several service trips to Nene O Moloka`i. Projects include hand-clearing of a wetland, making ceramic plant identification signs, sewing silk weighing bags, helping to write text for coloring books and drawing educational puzzles, scrubbing ponds and feed bins,  gathering seeds of native plants and plant propagation. Service trips and educational field trips are booked in advance. We can accommodate approximately 40 students at one time for day trips, and 10 - 12 individuals on camping service trips.

All educational programs are offered to students free of charge. Programs we currently need help developing are:

"Plant Some Poop Project" Students plant nene poop in a sterile medium to learn what nene are eating in the wild and how seeds are spread. Funding is needed for potting soil, biodegradable peat pots, and fertilizer.

"A Night With The Nene" A one-night camp out to learn nene behavior. Funding is needed to purchase two-person pup-tents, for airfare for off-island students, and for food costs.

"Wastewater Waterfowl" A weekly field trip to the local wastewater plant where several endangered species and federally protected species of waterbirds feed and nest. Funds are needed to purchase 24 binoculars and 24 bird identification books.

"Wildlife Without Walls" An outdoor classroom providing additional environmental education for students, teachers and island visitors. Funds are needed for construction of an  open-air multi-purpose covered structure and supply storage cabinets, tables and stools, science supplies such as microscopes and aquariums, and a full-time Educational/Community Projects Coordinator.

Funding is being sought for hand-out coloring books:

"Ducks of the Hawaiian Flyway"

"Hawai`i's Winter Waders"

"Na Nene"

"Not All Ducks Go Quack"
