Contractualism

• The power to enforce behavior can only come from the consent of the governed, and that consent is premissed upon the agreement of others.

• Social Contract: Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau all thought society is based on a free (or at least rational) agreement of individuals.

• Libertarians like this version of ethics.

• If someone violates the contract, they are enemies, and we are no longer bound by the agreement. Reciprocity.
