- Dr. Seuss occupies a special place in my heart,
since my children grew up on his books. I enjoyed them as a father. As
a teacher of children and adults with dyslexia, I have discovered why
I enjoyed them so much. The carefully designed vocabulary tells a repetitive
and predictable story and explores the souynds of our language. The story
makes the link between the symbol and the sound it makes. As it grows,
my store will stock every Seuss title.
- For an adult trying to keep track of what's new
and what's good in children's books, the award lists are invaluable. The
Newbery
Award is presented to the best children's book of the year, while the
Caldecott
award is presented to the illustrator of the best picture book of the year.
In Hawaii, we also have the Nene
Award for the best Hawaiian children's book. Once you have worked your
way through the winners, go to the honorable mentions, then to other books
by the same authors and illustrators. Its hard to go wrong.
- In our public library, books with illustrations
on every page are called "easy books",and young readers stay away from
them because of that label. That's sad, because there are so many good
picture books today with really deep and philosophical messages. I'm not
sure whether the author had that intention initially, but the deeper message
is there. My favorite examples are Oh, the Places You'll Go and
The
Velveteen Rabbit.
